Split Top Console Table
With a top constructed from a split sinker cypress board joined by walnut bowties and angled legs tied together by bridle joints, this console table is an exercise in precise craftsmanship. Steel rod shelves add an industrial edge and a space ideal for shoes or storage baskets.

Description
Beyond the slick design and advanced joinery techniques, perhaps the most appealing feature of this console table is the material used for its tabletop. “Sinker” cypress is acquired by extracting cypress logs that have been submerged, often for hundreds of years, in bodies of water across the southern US. In some cases these logs are broken-off parts from primitive rafts that were used for transport down rivers. This long-lasting submersion preserves the wood and imparts wonderful steaks of color within the grain.
The live edges of the board, which create the split in the tabletop, were kept as a way to preserve a natural element of this enduring wood. Aesthetically they lend an organic form that is reminiscent of a meandering river.
